Isn't this something...

Descendants of black American slaves are suing London's oldest insurance firm, Lloyd's of London, for compensation for allegedly underwriting the ships used in the slave trade. The case will throw a strange light on one of the atrocities of modern times.

Insurance could be such a difficult issue for the owners of slave ships.

Take the case of the Zong, a British vessel out of Liverpool that transported a human cargo from Africa in 1781.

Food and water were running low; some of the slaves were dying.

So, what to do? Under the terms of the insurance, a death by natural causes would not receive payment, but a death by drowning would.

The answer was clear to Captain Luke Collingwood: throw more than 130 slaves overboard to claim the insurance.

In the event, the matter was contested when it came to court.

The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Mansfield, was clearly uneasy even as he understood the dilemma: "The case of the slaves was the same as if horses had been thrown overboard.''

I dont think that people should be given money because a lot of people will try to claim what does not belong to them. I think that what would be a good idea is to provide free DNA testing for all descendants of slaves to trace their African origin. This will help people heal and move on and embrace their African roots.

I think the USA labs will mail you (FedEx) the kit. You take the sample and mail it back to them. In the USA they will cover the postage but outside the US you have to pay the shipping.

If it is not too personal what would you like to find out from the test?

I'd consider doing it as well, even though I've known my family tree since childhood.

From what I can remember, my Gaelic origins are post-abolition dating back to the early 19th century. God only knows where the mispronounciation of my surname stems from...

i think DNA testing would reveal some really interesting results and not just amongst the creoles but amongst all ethnic groups in SL. DNA testing will confirm that we are all closer than we think... that's what i like most of it. In fact i think it should become compulsory all over the world.. imagine.. Bush is distant cousin of Osama...

Well, imagine. Dunno if Tgongs remembers this, but I actually had an arguement with a teacher at King Harman once about how my name is pronounced (Mer-cor-mack and not Mor-kor-mok) - as if I did'nt know!LOL

Also remember once at POW being the source of 'monas' for a couple of days after demonstrating how my name was to be pronounced. I just gave up after that! Nowadays, I just accept that Sierra Leoneans pronounce the name differently to everyone elseWink

Did anyone (in the USA) see the PBS documentary with Henry Louis Gates the Harvard professor? Anyway he worked with African-American celebrities to use DNA to trace their African roots. He had Oprah, Chris Tucker, Whoopi Goldberg, Mae Jemison and others. Oprah's DNA showed that she could have an ancestor from the Kpelle people of Liberia. I could tell she was kind of disappointed because she wanted to be told she was from South Africa. Chris Tucker had a strong DNA match to the area of I think it was Angola and he went on a visit.

There were a lot of suprises. Mae Jemison (the astronaut) had Chinese ancestry and if I remember right both the maternal only and paternal only line of Henry Louis Gates traced back to Europe even though he is as dark as I am.

I saw it, and it was very interesting. I hope Oprah tries to embrace Liberia like she has SA.

I wonder how authentic this DNA testing with respect to ancestry. I had a look at some website (a US one) and they listed the tribes/ethnic groups in Salone as Temne and Mende only. I seem to remember from Social Studies that it was more like Temne, Limba, Loko, Fula, Yalunka, Krim, Vai, Krio etc. about 15-17 altogether (obviously there are ethnic groups that we share with neighbouring countries). I definitely think there is some dodgyness involved. Maybe they just take the fees, sit there and twiddle their fingers all day and then decide by some lucky dip where we come from.

hmm... all so confusing Smile

In Sierra Leone the word Creole refers to a member of the Krio ethnic group. The ancestors of the Krio were freed slaves from the United States, Canada, the British West Indies and various parts of West Africa. Their offspring (born in the Freetown colony) came to be known as Creoles or its cognate Krio. Some of these Krios or creoles were also of mixed ancestry.
